Step into the dream realm, where imagination and fear intertwine. The Dreamthief is an enchanting adventure that follows Bjørn, a young boy who must journey through a world shaped by dreams—both wondrous and terrifying. As rifts begin to tear apart this fragile realm, Bjørn must face his fears in the unknown — to seal the portals and stop the Dreamthief from unraveling the dream world forever.

Some say dreams are just fleeting illusions—fragments of imagination that vanish with the morning light. But what if they weren’t?

Bjørn’s parents are gone and the impossible feels real, where wonder and fear walk hand in hand. The sky bends, shadows whisper, and great rifts tear through the fabric of dreams. Something is stealing them, unraveling the magic of the dream world piece by piece. Follow Bjørn’s journey and help him save his parents from the dreamthief.

More About

The DreamThief is an isometric action-adventure game that draws inspiration from the visual expression and storytelling style of Studio Ghibli, and from the metroidvania genre as known from games like Tunic, Hollow Knight and classic Zelda titles.

The game is being developed by Epictale Interactive, a Norwegian indie studio consisting of committed professionals who share a vision of creating story-driven games with deep gameplay mechanics and emotional, atmospheric worlds.

The player takes on the role of Bjørn, a young boy who witnesses a mysterious figure stealing his parents' dreams. In pursuit of the DreamThief, he is thrown into a dream world that is being destroyed by nightmares and fear. Throughout this journey, Bjørn must face his own fears, confront monsters and mysteries, and slowly but surely understand that fear is not necessarily to be overcome – but met, understood and accepted.

The DreamThief is aimed at both adults and children, and is specifically developed with the intention of being a shared experience between generations – an interactive adventure book that can be experienced together. With a planned launch on PC (Steam) in the second quarter of 2026, and a possible potential for console porting at a later date, we aim to create a game that is both beautiful, deep and meaningful

The DreamThief is set in a dream world consisting of five unique zones. In addition to these zones, the player must constantly descend into the nightmare realm – a dark and dangerous underground layer where childhood fears have taken physical form. The nightmares are not just enemies in the classic sense – they represent real terrors: darkness, death, the unknown and the fear of abandonment. Bjørn himself is affected by these fears, and the player will notice how the fear mechanics affect gameplay. To overcome them, you must explore, solve puzzles and defeat the zones’ boss enemies – manifestations of the various fears.

Through this, you gain new abilities and learn valuable life lessons: that you must get up after falling, that what is scary can be faced, and that you must persevere – and you will find your way forward. The core of the game consists of intuitive combat, a balanced progression between light and darkness, and a series of abilities and upgrades that allow you to gradually gain access to new areas. The game's world is hand-painted, beautiful, and rich in visual storytelling, without the use of vocalization. Everything is communicated through the environment and the characters' dialogue boxes.
